The most important distinction between patch panel types is whether or not circuit breakers must be provided in the panel.

Patch Panels for Dimmers

Patch panels designed for use in situations where only permanently installed dimmers are used, need not have branch circuit breakers. Patch panels used for road-show connection must have branch circuit breaker protection. This is a requirement of the N.E.C. ( Article 520-50c ).
